X is for ...

Xterra Utah Off-Road Triathlon (2012)!

The first time I'd ever heard of a Triathlon, I wondered what it was. It sounded sporty. It is something sporty! It all began in 1996 in Maui as Aquaterra. It's like a marathon but involving 3 different activities: swimming, mountain biking, and trail running. Whew!

You may enroll in the Championship race, or just for the  Xterra experience!

Have you ever been in a Triathlon?

Triathons are becoming very popular, but - even as a relatively fit gym instructor - I consider them to be evil and horrendous!

I've never been in a triathlon, but have friends who have. Tough stuff.

No. I cheer on my kids. They do the triathlons. I see that they have good food after they cross the finish line.

I did a sprint tri a few years ago. I think it was a 500m swim (though that sounds awfully long), a 16 mi bike ride, and a 3.12 mi run. I felt like I had prepared to the best of my ability, but wow--I was humbled.

To this day, it goes down as one of the hardest physical things I've ever done. And I didn't even get a medal for finishing. Tri Rule #1: Only register for races that offer medals.
