Ever since my paranormal romance, Darkspell, was published, my career has been a huge struggle. My publisher restructured her company (personal choice, has nothing to do with going bankrupt), and I've had many fantastic opportunities present themselves. Just as quickly, they each slipped from my fingers. It has been a long, frustrating and hard road to travel.
Writing is my love. It is and has been my favorite pastime since my early teens! I am not published because I'm in it for the money. Anyone who believes authors are rich needs to realize that you are only viewing a tiny scope based off the famous ones. It's like being a teacher: you do it because you love it and if you go into it for money, you will be disappointed.
Though I've signed on several of my works with another publisher, I've decided to go a different direction along with mighty prayer. I don't do things lightly.
My family comes first. I have taken a step from my authorly career to dedicate my time on raising my five kids. I feel strongly the Lord's hand in my direction and will go where He dictates.
Though, for the most part, I am breaking from being a published author, I am not breaking from writing! I have taken down most of my works over on Wattpad (Darkspell, Eros, Kursed, Baby's Breath, Hidden, and Rock Star), but will be putting them back up. I promise I WILL get those out one way or another when it is my time.
Thank you for bearing with me. I apologize for disappointing those who have been waiting for pending books to release!

What unexpected forks in the road have you taken?
Elizabeth, these tough writing days too shall pass. Trust me when I say that there will be a glorious light at the end of our writing tunnel :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rachna. You're fantabulous! <3
DeleteI don't know how you do any writing with five children. When my brood were still at home, I didn't do any writing for years. Do what will make you happy and comfortable.

This summer has been crazy for me, I find myself restless because I haven't written in a long time! But during those rare and quiet moments (bedtime), I need to try harder.
DeleteHaving met you once at a book club I know you will never stop writing and you will make it all happen in due time. But being a mom comes first. They grow up too fast. And even in their teens, when it seems like they're independent, they need mom watching closely.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Karen! <3
DeleteWow! Five kids. That is a lot of work. I only have two and I can't write a thing unless they are out of the house. Things have been steady here. No big changes. Hopefully your path will take you where you need to go.
ReplyDeleteThank you, in due time, right? :)
DeleteThat sure is a big decision you made, Elizabeth. I sure hope everything works out and that you will publish again. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chrys. Me too! <3
DeleteSorry it's been such a struggle, but looking back on that "Cry for help" post something needed to change. If you focus on the things that are important to you - family, and writing for the pleasure of writing - I'm sure new ways forward will open up.
ReplyDeleteThat earlier post is probably more typical of the majority of authors than people out there realize. Yes, they only hear about the miniscule fraction of 1% of authors who make it big, and media portrayals of authors don't help either. My big fork in the road was to stop seeking traditional publishing and take matters into my own hands. Sure, I'll never get any useful exposure without the marketing machine of a big publishing house behind me, but most trad published authors don't get that anyway. And I am loving the freedom to set my own agenda, to release and market (minimally) on my own terms.
Being an entrepreneur does have many freedoms. I might take that road when my time comes. :) Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm happy you've found your niche!
DeleteI'm sorry your publishing journey hasn't gone the way you'd planned. That's rough. Life can deal so many frustrations. I've always believed that when God closes a door, somewhere he opens a window. I hope that your new direction is your window and that it brings you joy and peace and future prosperity with your writing.
ReplyDeletethank you for that comfort, Lori. ((hugs)) I look forward to the windows opening from Heaven. <3
DeleteIt's a big step, but if it feels right to you, then it must be. It's not forever, after all. There are so many other ways of getting published these days. You need to concentrate on your five kidlets! They must keep you so busy.
ReplyDeleteThis has been the craziest summer for me, I don't know how I've survived my other 4 being toddlers! I guess I should consult my journals! xD
DeleteIt tough, but yeah, family comes first. I will echo everyone else here in my amazement that you have been able to write at all with five kidlets!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's my favorite thing to do and I am blessed with the ability to write very fast and I take advantage of that when they are asleep! :)
DeleteFive kids is a lot to handle and they need your attention. This business is all about timing, and if it's not the right time now, it will be later. I remember when Darkspell came out and I'm sure I'll be around when your next book is released.
ReplyDeleteAw, you're an awesome friend and supporter! :)
DeleteI'm afraid I agree with those stating the kids are first. Really, the time just goes by too quickly. With hindsight, you are wise to make those memories with your kids. You are blessed to have them. God works in mysterious ways.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your achievements so far. And all the best to you in your future endeavors. No doubt you'll return someday with a new perspective. Enjoy life for it's fleeting!
Thank you for the words of wisdom! I'll hold tight to every precious memory!
DeleteFive kids? What a blessing!
ReplyDeleteFor everything there is a time and season... and remember the kids will grow up someday.
You'll always be a writer... it's not going to leave you.
Happy writing!

I love that, thank you! <3
DeleteElizabeth, I'm making my way around the blogverse for the first time in a very long time and I wanted to stop in and say HI. I'm glad I did! Cudos to you for doing what's right for YOU.
