Killdeer!
Okay, why is the killdeer called killdeer? Because when scientists first heard its call, it sounded like it was saying, "killdeer." Funny, isn't it?
These birds nest flat on the ground! Imagine that? I wonder how they survive predators. I found this clip on youtube, do you think its defensive tactics work very well? After a long display of "broken" wing tricks, if the predator doesn't leave, it flies away. Me thinks, what about them eggies?
What sort of cool birds live in your area?
The name makes sense when you explain it. I was thinking it didn't look like it was capable of killing a deer!
ReplyDeleteAwwww they look like sandpipers! I;m so sorry Elizabeth but I wish these well meaning people filming this poor mama bird would have just stayed at the safest distance possible and not frightened it off its nest. It was obviously in distress and they kept filming! Poor mama! I say this again, they nest where they have always nested before anyone decided it was ok to build houses on their nesting site! I shall go away and calm down now! LOL!

These have got to be the most annoying birds. They would lay eggs on the kickball field during elementary school and when we would get close, those dang birds would chase us down.
ReplyDeleteOdd sound for a bird to make.
ReplyDeleteAwww. The poor thing was sounding off looking at the people like, "Please! Just back off!"
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog I am glad you liked my post for today. That is a very odd noise for a bird to make by the way. What is another animal that makes weird sounds? I can't think of it right now and it's on the tip of my tongue oh mocking birds. Cause they apparently can mock you.

Funny I should come to your blog today when on my morning walk I saw a beautiful brown bird with a bright red breast. I'm not a bird person, but this one really caught my eye. Nice post!

I've never heard of this bird before. In my area, we have very common birds, like robins, sparrows, blackbirds etc
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I hear the bird population is diminishing each year. Very sad.
That is funny, its name. I see parrots outside the window. Hm, that's unusual. The crows flying about are more common.....
ReplyDeleteThey are wonderful birds. Such fun to watch.
ReplyDeletethat is cool. And nothing near to the killdeer cool here. Just us woodpeckers.
ReplyDeleteI just saw for the first time 3 vulchers. They are the size of a child. I was so scared.
