Are You a Prolific Reader?

Have you ever heard of a makeup artist who doesn't wear makeup? Or a chef who doesn't cook at home? What about a writer who never reads?

I have to admit that I'm way out of the loop of the hottest reads out there. As a writer, I'm bustling about editing, writing, critiquing, endorsing, illustrating, blogging, networking, marketing, setting up appointments--not counting real life motherhood and outside activities--and reading.

What, reading?

I read. A LOT! I read self-help books and many authorly friend books for book reviews. I read my own books--ahem, does that count?

I have friends who are in the same situation as I am: they are avid readers of the books they review. Does that make me like the fashion model who slums it while she's off duty?

How do you manage to keep up with the greatest and latest of books and write and edit and critique and endorse and blog and...and...?

  1. Well to be a good writer, we need to be good readers. This is why I am helping another blog with book reviews. It forces me to read. I also do reviews on my own blog to make sure I keep up with my reading.
I have a reading schedule and am working to get back on that schedule.
    I wish you luck!

  2. I'm actually terrible for reading. I love reading, don't get me wrong, but I give myself so little time for it. See, I'm always worried that any spare time I have should be spent writing. I need to learn to balance things out more.

  3. I've often thought I should use the time that I blog to read, but when I think that, I go through withdrawal. I've heard of force feeding...but force reading? You're doing fine.

  4. I read very slowly and most eclectically! I think I do my most reading on the very long commute to and from work! Reading has always been my bestest friend long before blogging and even writing so I'll never abandon it! I just read very slowly! LOL!

    Take care

  5. I don't do all that you do so I guess that's how I have the time! But when life gets busy, I make time for reading right before bed. Even if I can only keep my eyes open through one chapter. That's something! Usually I end up staying up reading way later than I should, LoL. It's worth it though! I love to read. :)

  6. I'm a prolific reader when I'm not in a writing time crunch. It's all a balancing act, one that'll take me a lifetime to figure out!

  7. Ninja juggling skills.
I don't get to read as many books as I did in the past. A couple a month now. Does reading a hundred blog posts a day count?

  8. Mel, I bought 3 new YA books! I'm so excited to read those! I have shelves of books that I should get to reading. Reading is like dessert after the meat and potatoes of writing! ;)

Paul, I'm there too! In fact, I carry my laptop around during the dead times like when my hubby drives around town and I'm in the passenger seat. It's tricky I'll say that much!

Jennifer, oh, reading sure is delicious! It's hard for me to try to keep up with the latest and greatest though. My Goodreads friends put me to shame! :(

Laura, I know what you mean! There's something whimsical about reading. *Sigh*

Eileen, yes, I agree with you on that!

Alex, ROFL! Yes, I know you read your eyes out. They should invent computer glasses for those who love to hang out on the internet! :)

  9. You've pretty much described my reading life for the last year. Except I don't have a published novel.

Soon, I'll be taking a break to read a few books and finishing writing one of my own :)

  10. Like you, I end up reading a lot of debut books or manuscripts written by my authors friends to help them out. Hey - I say it counts! There are a few Bestsellers out there that I read for pure enjoyment, though not nearly as many as I'd LIKE to read, because there isn't time to read for "work" and read for pleasure. But I love what I do, so reading manuscripts is pleasurable reading for me. *Nods*

  11. I notice I read differently now. I no longer just read in my comfort zone. When I opened myself up to read for other than enjoyment I found a new world of talent in different genres. Now reading is more of an adventure. When I read my favorites, it's a vacation.

You're sure balancing a lot. Good job!

  12. No one ACTUALLY keeps on top of it. I read one or two books a week, but know that once in a while there will be a week or two where I won't read anything outside of what's on my computer.

I learn too much reading and I want people to support my books when they come out, so . . .

But yeah. It's WAY WAY hard.

  13. Donna, it's crazy busy being a writer and helping other writers! I can't wait to read your book! :)

J.D., yay! Score one for us! We do tons of it, it should count!

Giggles, that's great! I love reading too! It's a fantastic dessert for me! <3

Jolene, I feel the same exact way! Here's hoping that I'll get the same TLC for Darkspell. ;)

  14. I set aside some time at the end of each day to get some reading done. It's a great way to relax and expand those horizons ;)

  15. It's not easy. I do most of my reading before bed. I just bought a nook, which is helping me get through the pile up on my PC. Most converted to my nook. some didn't. It'll take me years to get to those I'm afraid.

  16. I love to read, but lately I find myself reading books for review sent to me by other authors, not necessarily books I want to read... Don't get me wrong. I want to help others (I believe in the reciprocal rewards) and some of these books are fantastic. Many are outside my preferred genre, however, or are just not that good. Yikes! Then what?!
    I've started becoming more selective.

On a completely different note, I awarded you a 'Liebster Award' today. You might want to check it out.

  17. I'm reading more books written by friends this year. I try to average two books a month. I wish I had time to read more. Last year, I read over thirty novels. Where does all the time go?

  18. I don't keep up as much as I should. I'm thinking of squeezing in reading into my workouts. It's really hard. The small amount of reading I do that doesn't involve reading my own manuscript or blogs is on the weekend. :)
